FORT DRUM — North country residents now can learn more about what is going on at the Army post by tuning in to its new television program, "Drum TV," airing on WPBS-TV, Watertown.
The half-hour show runs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and includes information about activities on and off post.
Regular segments include reports from deployed 10th Mountain Division soldiers, area events, travel ideas and even home improvement advice.
"We wanted to cover all aspects for our audience," said Fort Drum Command Information Officer Karin J. Martinez.
She said "Drum TV" has been on a channel available only on the installation since May 2006, but anyone off post, including many soldiers and their families, were unable to view it.
Ms. Martinez said the installation wanted to change that, not only for Fort Drum families, but for all residents.
"We want the community to also see this," she said.
"Drum TV" began expanding its audience by broadcasting the show on Fort Drum's Web site starting last summer. However, officials still wanted to do more.
According to Ms. Martinez, the Public Affairs Office researched a number of options, including buying a cable access channel, before turning to WPBS. Representatives from the show met with WPBS officials in late November and found them receptive to the idea.
"We're always interested in airing local content," said WPBS Director of Programming and Development Lynn Brown.
The program began airing on WPBS on Jan. 9, and Ms. Martinez and the show's producer, Kae L. Young, said the response has been positive.
"It's been very good," Mrs. Young said.
Ms. Martinez said people have commented that the show allows them to see a side of Fort Drum they are not normally able to see.
"It's been tremendous and we're so excited," she said.
