CROGHAN — The village mayor has decided to step down, and his successor likely will be determined by write-in votes.

Mayor Glen A. Gagnier decided not to run for re-election after six years at the village helm.

And, since no other village residents filed a nominating petition, voters in Tuesday's village election will have to write in their favored candidates for the four-year mayoral seat.

At least one trustee slot also will be determined through write-in votes. Trustee William Shambo is the lone candidate on the ballot for two open four-year trustee seats, since Trustee David Nuffer did not file a nominating petition for re-election.

Victorious candidates may decline their positions. If so, village trustees could fill any vacancies by appointment, said Elaine McLear, Lewis County's Democratic election commissioner.

Mr. Gagnier, a past trustee, was appointed mayor in January 2002 after Mayor James A. Zehr stepped down to accept a job as maintenance director of the village's water and sewer systems. He ran unopposed in 2004.

Constableville voters will have a contested race. Robert Greene, Carol Czajka and Zack Wilton are running for two open trustee seats.

Six other Lewis County villages have uncontested races:

■ Castorland: Deputy Mayor Benjamin Colton is running for a four-year term as mayor as Mayor Richard Ward steps down. Trustees Candy Bezek and Mark Moshier are running for four-year terms.

■ Copenhagen: Trustees Kenneth Clarke and Gerald Snyder are running unopposed for re-election.

■ Lyons Falls: Mayor Ronald Dorrity and Trustees Jeffrey Hoskins and Gary Rushford are running unopposed for re-election.

■ Lowville: Trustees Charles W. Truax Jr. and Brian P. Western are seeking new four-year terms.

■ Port Leyden: Trustees Peter Smith and Peter Kraeger are running for new two-year terms.

■ Turin: Trustee Kelly Amidon is running for another four-year term.

Village elections will be held from noon to 9 p.m.

IN JEFFERSON COUNTY...

The following candidates are running for village offices in Jefferson County. All positions carry two-year terms. Elections will be from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the respective village offices, except where indicated:

■ Ellisburg: Trustee Gregory B. Lake is running unopposed.

■ Evans Mills: Trustees Mark A. Leroux and Sandra J. Veivia are running unopposed.

■ Glen Park: Mayor Stephen E. Macaulay and Trustees Daniel G. Munson and Joan Postorino are running unopposed. Voting will be held at the Glen Park Fire Hall, 630 Main St.
