FORT DRUM — A former post colonel will not return to take command of the installation when the 10th Mountain Division headquarters deploys this spring.
Maj. Gen. Michael L. Oates, commander of the 10th Mountain Division, told a group of community leaders Monday that Brig. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, the division's deputy commander for operations, not retired Col. Robert T. Guglielmi, would lead Fort Drum as part of a rear detachment after headquarters departs.
About 1,000 soldiers, including Gen. Oates and Col. David J. Clark, Fort Drum's garrison commander, are scheduled to begin a 15-month tour in Iraq in May.
Gen. Oates also said Gen. Buchanan would likely deploy to Iraq at some time during headquarters' tour, but did not say when or who would take over at that point.
Gen. Oates had said at the State of the Division address in January that Col. Guglielmi, a former commander of Division Support Command at Fort Drum, would return to take command of the installation this spring.
Fort Drum media relations officer Benjamin E. Abel confirmed the appointment Tuesday. Mr. Abel said he was unsure why Col. Guglielmi would not be taking command of the installation.
He also confirmed that Col. Kenneth Riddle would become the garrison commander in Col. Clark's absence, as Gen. Oates had said in January. Mr. Abel did not know where Col. Riddle would be transferring from.
Col. Guglielmi previously served at Fort Drum as the commander of Division Support Command and left the installation in 2004 to work at the Pentagon, according to the post's newspaper, the Fort Drum Blizzard.
Gen. Buchanan was promoted to deputy commander of operations in December and received his first general's star in February.
According to the Blizzard, before his assignment at Fort Drum, Gen. Buchanan served at U.S. Army North, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He has also served at Fort Campbell, Ky., Fort Bragg, N.C., U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, and as the commander of the 2nd Brigade, 75th Division in Iraq.
