The Department of Defense has reported that a second 10th Mountain Division soldier was killed Monday in Iraq.

Sgt. Joseph A. Richard III, 27, of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Polk, La., was killed by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Baghdad.

The DoD said Tuesday that Spc. Arturo Huerta-Cruz, 23, of the 1st Brigade Combat Team died Monday when an improvised explosive device detonated while his patrol was near Tuz.

Two other soldiers from his unit were injured in the Tuz explosion. Their names and conditions were not released by the Army.

A native of St. Martinville, La., Sgt. Richard joined the Army in January 2003. He was originally assigned to the 588th Combat Engineer Battalion based at Fort Hood, Texas, in May 2004 and then the 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment in October 2005.

Sgt. Richard was reassigned to the 4th Brigade in March 2007 and served as a combat engineer noncommissioned officer, with the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion.

He previously deployed to Iraq from May 2003 to April 2004 and again from December 2005 to November 2006.

Sgt. Richard's awards include a Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge.

He is survived by his wife and parents.
