Debbi Karabinis, Coronado, Calif., announces the engagement of her goddaughter, Shasta Friend, Tucson, Ariz., to Jeffrey S. Schafer, Tucson, formerly of Watertown.

Miss Friend, daughter of Richard Friend, Chula Vista, Calif., and the late Cindi Friend, graduated in 1999 from Coronado High School and recently received an associate's degree in English from Southwestern College, Chula Vista. She is an aspiring writer in Tucson.

Mr. Schafer, son of the late Kathleen and Robert Schafer, graduated in 1986 from South Jefferson Central School, Adams, and served 20 years in the Navy, retiring in 2006. He is employed with Bestcomm Networks LLC, Tucson.

A June 8 wedding is planned in Coronado.
