Ted E. Lanphear

CRANBERRY LAKE — Ted E. Lanphear, 88, Tooley Pond Road, died Thursday morning at Clifton-Fine Hospital, Star Lake, after a brief illness.

Mr. Lanphear was a welder in the shipyards of New London, Conn., and Galveston, Texas. He was employed at the Clifton Ore Mines and as a general maintenance foreman at Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp., Star Lake, until his retirement in 1975. He then rented tents and ran concession stands at fairs, and built and operated Ted's Windfall House bar and restaurant from 1971 to 1988.

Born Feb. 19, 1920, in Edwards, son of Sherdie and Irene Hickok Lanphear, he attended Edwards school and graduated from high school at Vocational Tech, Syracuse.

He married Julie Cree Blackmer on Sept. 26, 1978. A previous marriage, to Rosalie Smith, ended in divorce.

He was a former member of the Cranberry Lake Fire Department, a member of Masonic Lodge 277, Edwards, and the Shriners, Watertown, and an honorary member of Cranberry Lake Fish and Game Club. He enjoyed carpentry and buying and selling property.

Surviving besides his wife are a stepson and his wife, Brett and Marcy Blackmer, Cranberry Lake; a son and his wife, Robert "Gene" and Elizabeth, Syracuse; two daughters, Linda Hoster, Seneca Falls, and Diane Bartlett, North Troy, Vt.; a brother and his wife, Max and Helen, Edwards; six grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A sister, Jeanne Lanphear, and a son, Thomas, in infancy, died before him.

The funeral with Masonic service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hawley Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cranberry Lake Cemetery. A reception will follow burial at Cranberry Lake Fire Hall.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
