JCC sweeps pair against Tompkins Cortland CC

DRYDEN — Luis Castillo struck out 13 and walked three in seven innings, and the Jefferson Community College baseball team earned a 10-4 Mid-State Athletic Conference victory in eight innings over host Tompkins Cortland CC in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday.

The Cannoneers also claimed the second matchup, 6-2.

Peter Allen provided three hits and two RBIs, while Luke Meyer and Dustin Francis each generated two hits in the first game for Jefferson, which scored six runs in the eighth inning to bust out of a 4-4 tie. Andrew Boulter drove in a pair of runs for JCC.

In the second game, Tate Kelly recorded 11 strikeouts, and Meyer and Ronnie Sellers drove in two runs apiece for the Cannoneers (14-19 overall, 12-14 Region 3).

Kurt Handley contributed two hits in the first game for the Panthers (9-21, 8-12).

TOMPKINS CORTLAND CC 2-0,

JEFFERSON CC 1-10

Eliza Gaines went 2-for-4 with a double and pitched a two-hitter to give Jefferson Community College a split of its Mid-State Athletic Conference doubleheader in Dryden.

Gaines struck out eight en route to the shutout. She also doubled in the first game.

Stacey Peterson went 3-for-3 for JCC (21-11, 17-7 Region 3) in the second game. Emily Patterson doubled and singled. Heather Kelsey doubled and drove in two runs.

In the first game, the Cannoneers managed two hits against Niki Rieman, who tied a school record with 13 strikeouts. Danielle O'Rouke and Rose Dovi each went 2-for-3 for the Panthers (21-12, 17-7).
