MASSENA — Wayne L. Fitzsimmons, 72, of 508 County Route 37, died Friday afternoon at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home, where he had been a patient since Feb. 12, 2007.
He was a general mechanic at the Aluminum Company of America, retiring in 1991.
Born Aug. 24, 1935, in Long River, Prince Edward Island, son of Cyril and Margaret Verrigan Fitzsimmons, he attended school at Long River and Montreal, Quebec.
He married Phyllis H. Kirkey on July 20, 1957, at St. Columban's Catholic Church, Cornwall, Ontario. He was an avid horseman, having owned, trained and driven harness horses in the United States and Canada. He also enjoyed fishing.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Steven, Plattsburgh; and a brother, Byron, Calgary, Alberta.
A sister, Rita McDonald, and a brother, Austin, died before him.
