CLAYTON — State police charged a town of Clayton man Monday with using a vehicle without permission and, upon further investigation, they solved what had been reported as a burglary at a relative's home.

Steve A. Evans, 25, of 17225 County Route 5, faces charges of third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, making a punishable false written statement and petit larceny.

Police said he took a pickup truck from an unspecified town of Clayton location without permission, ran the vehicle off a road April 26 and then abandoned it. He then allegedly gave a trooper false information about the incident.

Further investigation by trooper Warren Johnson and investigators with the state police's Bureau of Criminal Investigations led to Mr. Evans additionally being charged with petit larceny. Police said he stole numerous tools from a relative's home in the town of Clayton during March and April. The alleged thefts had initially been reported to state police as burglaries.

Two more people, Derek J. Schafer, 19, Union Street, Clayton, and Nicholas F. Leeson, 17, of 26094 Limestone Road, Redwood, were charged Monday with fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property for allegedly having tools stolen from Mr. Evans's relative. Police said a large quantity of the tools have been recovered.

Mr. Schafer and Mr. Leeson were issued tickets for Town Court. Mr. Evans was arraigned in Town Court and sent to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building, Watertown, on $500 bail. He was then turned over to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, which held a violation-of-probation warrant and a Family Court warrant for him. Bail in those matters was set at $2,500.
