OGDENSBURG — An Ogdensburg man who allegedly drove his pickup truck at a police officer Wednesday was jailed after being charged with felony reckless endangerment, unlawfully fleeing a police officer and related charges.

Zachary H. Smith, 19, of 303 William St., was arrested after a series of incidents that began at 9:33 a.m. when his mother, Mildred I. Smith, called to report a domestic dispute with her son, Police Chief Richard J. Polniak Jr. said.

As officers arrived at the Smith home, they spotted Mr. Smith driving away in a blue pickup truck, Mr. Polniak said.

"He drove at one of our officers," the chief said. "They were pounding on his truck, trying to get him to stop. He refused."

A short chase ended about a half-mile away near the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge approach, and Mr. Smith was taken into custody, Mr. Polniak said. He was arraigned in City Court on felony charges of first-degree reckless endangerment as well as unlawfully fleeing a police officer, possession of marijuana and eight Vehicle and Traffic Law charges. He was ordered held in St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, in lieu of $500 bail or a $1,000 bond pending further court action.

Although Detective August J. Bonno, who had to leap out of the way of Mrs. Smith's truck, was not injured, Detective Daniel C. Mousaw had to be treated for a dog bite after being bitten by one of Mr. Smith's dogs, Mr. Polniak said. He was treated at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center and released, he said.
