Always friendly service at Severance
SATURDAY, MAY 10, 2008

I was saddened to learn Severance Photo is closing. I seem to recall that when I began developing and printing my own photographs, Severance was on the south side of Public Square just across Franklin Street from Conde's Hardware.

My major task was to wheedle Mom to drive me into Watertown, usually not that difficult, just to pick up Kodak TriChem packs of developer, stop bath and fixer. TriChem packs were unavailable elsewhere.

The Severance staff knew why I was coming. With a knowing smile, a couple packs would be placed on the counter as I sauntered in. Just smiles exchanged before progressing to settle up.

Later, when Kinney Rexall started carrying TriChems, Severance upped the ante by gifting me an initial bulk supply of fixer. Kept me coming back.

Later still, when I progressed to color photography, they helped me augment my gear suitably and, upon my realizing I bit off more than I could chew, guided me through the first few batches.

Helpful. Considerate. Always friendly, attentive service. As a school kid, I can't imagine I contributed much to Severance's profit margin, but no matter, they were there for me.

One can only publicly thank Severance and bid the principals a fond adieu.

May the wind be always to your back.
