SALISBURY, Md. — Watertown native Jim Berkman became the NCAA's all-time leader in coaching wins as his Salisbury University men's lacrosse team defeated Ohio Wesleyan, 13-5, in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday.
With the Sea Gulls' victory, Berkman has amassed 327 wins in 21 years as a head coach. He passed retired Army coach Jack Emmer for the top spot on the all-time list. Berkman has collected 318 victories in 20 years at Salisbury.
The top-ranked Sea Gulls (18-0), the defending national champions, will host Cabrini College (17-2) in the quarterfinals Wednesday. In the past six years, Salisbury has won four national titles.
The Bishops (10-7) were tied with Salisbury at 3-3 in the second quarter before the Sea Gulls finished the game on a 10-2 run. Matt Hickman scored four goals and assisted on another to lead the Sea Gulls. Bruce Richardson also scored four times.
Carthage native Kyle Burto was inserted in the second half of the game for the Sea Gulls, and the senior midfielder took one shot on goal.
Nick Gallagher led Ohio Wesleyan with two goals and one assist.
OHIO STATE 15, CORNELL 7
Pete Poillon netted a game-high three goals as the Buckeyes upset the eighth-seeded Big Red on its home turf in a Division I first-round game in Ithaca.
Goalie Stefan Schroder went the length of the field and scored the game's first goal to start the rout for the Buckeyes. Ohio State (11-5) will return to Cornell's Schoellkopf Field next Sunday to face No. 1 Duke in the quarterfinals.
Carthage native Mario Ventiquattro was rotated in off the bench for the Buckeyes. The sophomore attacker added two ground balls and one shot on goal.
DUKE 12, LOYOLA 7
Tewaaraton Trophy finalist Matt Danowski became the NCAA's all-time leading scorer with a seven-goal performance in the Blue Devils' first-round win over the Greyhounds.
Danowski finished with two goals and five assists for the top-ranked Duke (17-1). He eclipsed the previous mark of 343 career points set by Air Force's Joe Vasta. Danowski has 347 points.
Collin Finnerty, who played two seasons at Duke, led Loyola (7-7) with three goals.
NAVY 8, NORTH CAROLINA 7
Tim Paul buried four goals to lift the Midshipmen to an upset victory over the fourth-seeded Tar Heels in a first-round game in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Tommy Phelan made 12 saves for Navy (10-5), who will play either No. 5 Johns Hopkins or Hofstra in the quarterfinals Saturday in Annapolis, Md. Gavin Petracca led North Carolina (8-6) with three goals.
MARYLAND 10, DENVER 7
The seventh-seeded Terrapins (10-5) used a seven-goal run to put away the Pioneers in a first-round game in College Park, Md.
Grant Catalino tallied two goals and two assists to lead Maryland, which will face No. 2 Virginia or University of Maryland Baltimore County in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Annapolis, Md. Charley Dickenson produced a goal and two assists to pace Denver (10-7).
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
UNION 13, SUNY CORTLAND 12
Keri Messa netted four goals, including the game-winner, as the Dutchwomen edged the Red Dragons in a regional game of the Division III tournament on Saturday in Ewing, N.J.
Messa also provided two assists for Union (15-3). Jessie Fritz scored a team-high four goals for Cortland (14-6). Watertown native and freshman midfielder Emily Soderquist came off the bench for the Red Dragons, but didn't record a shot.
