CANTON — Western New England College attacker Jon Hayes hadn't scored more than four goals in a game for the Golden Bears ever. But he had that beat with five minutes left in the second quarter of his game against St. Lawrence University in the second round of the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse tournament Saturday.

Hayes finished with nine points — a career high — on seven goals and two assists in the 13-9 upset victory over the No. 10 Saints.

"It felt unreal," he said. "I don't think I've ever felt that way before."

Hayes scored six of his team's eight first-half goals as the Golden Bears took an 8-5 lead at halftime. No. 15 Western New England coach John Klepacki was in awe.

"I think Jon Hayes had one of the best individual performance I've seen of a lacrosse player in a game in a long time," he said.

The Saints failed to keep pace with Hayes and the rest of the Golden Bears in the first half, falling victim to the high-octane offense.

"They really like to push the ball up the field," St. Lawrence coach Mike Mahoney said, "If you get caught into that run-and-gun style it can catch up with you a little bit, and I think at times it did (today)."

St. Lawrence also failed to take advantage of defensive miscues and penalties against the Golden Bears, and that all culminated in a loss.

"There were a couple of times we had an extra man and didn't convert and then they pushed a break and scored two off of that," Mahoney said. "It's almost a two-goal swing potentially and I think from a defensive standpoint, that was the key to the game."

The Saints scored just once in seven extra-man opportunities and struggled to move the ball all game. The Golden Bears didn't make it any easier, switching from man-to-man into a zone defense once they built a four-goal cushion in the second half.

Midfielder Alex Slauson was able to figure out the Golden Bears defense, scoring three goals to lead St. Lawrence, but admitted the team struggled against it.

"The zone frustrated us and it slowed the game down," he said. "But at the same time, it left some open shots."

Attacker and Liberty League Player of the Year Will McKee had his share of open looks, too. He converted on two of 11 shots and credited Golden Bears goalie Chris Body, who made 12 saves, and the defense for making each shot difficult.

"I think they have a good goaltender. We didn't shoot as well as we'd like today," McKee said. "They saw me as a threat and decided to lock me off, which gave them some success."

McKee scored both his goals in the first half, the second of which tied the game at four in the second quarter. But St. Lawrence didn't take the lead, and when Hayes retaliated with three unanswered goals by himself, the Saints didn't threaten again.

"They executed a little bit better today," Mahoney said. "We got in that hole and it's tough to dig out of that hole against a quality team when you get to this point of the year."

Western New England snapped St. Lawrence's 11-game win streak and a 7-0 home record this season. The Saints fall to 11-3 overall while the Golden Bears improve to 15-4 and will play No. 7 Ithaca College on Wednesday.

"It's going to be awesome," Klepacki said of playing Ithaca. "I think we fought hard to play another day."

■ SUNY Cortland scored the final three goals of the game to escape with a 12-9 win over Springfield College in a second-round matchup in Cortland.

Massena's Neal Hopps rotated into the Red Dragons' midfield against Springfield, but didn't register a shot. It was the sophomore's first NCAA tournament game. Second-ranked Cortland (16-1) will host Middlebury College (13-2) in the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
