Woman's medical history probed after crash
WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 2008

A woman's medical history is being examined as the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate her involvement in an accident Sunday afternoon in which an 11-year-old girl was killed on Route 11, south of Watertown.

"We are checking into allegations that" Janine A. Smith "suffered from a medical condition," Sheriff John P. Burns confirmed Tuesday. He declined to elaborate about the health issue.

The sheriff also would not comment about whether Miss Smith's possible illness may have brought restrictions against her driving privileges.

Miss Smith, 46, Woodville, was driving a van south on Route 11 when the vehicle veered into the opposite lane, colliding with two other vehicles.

Morgan R. Rabetoy, 11, Richland, riding with Margaret E. Carr, 24, Richland, was killed. Seven people were injured.

Charges are pending against Miss Smith when the investigation is completed, according to the sheriff's office.
