Hospital gets newborn infant simulator
WEDNESDAY, JULY 2, 2008

LOWVILLE — Lewis County General Hospital now has a newborn infant simulator to aid in resuscitation training.

The simulator looks like a newborn infant and features realistic traits, including breathing, a pulse and even turning blue if not getting enough oxygen, a hospital release said. An intravenous connection can be started in three locations.

"We no longer have to pretend that the baby has a poor pulse or is turning blue when the team is practicing," Dr. M. Lynn Pisaniello said in a statement. "The simulator mimics what really happens when a baby is in trouble, and if the student doesn't resuscitate effectively, the baby doesn't show improvement."

Dr. Pisaniello and her husband, Dr. Daniel P. Pisaniello, since 1990 have taught an annual neonatal resuscitation course to all hospital staff involved in the birthing process.
