WEST LEYDEN — A West Leyden man was charged Saturday night with driving while intoxicated and numerous other offenses after fleeing from police and crashing on Osceola Road in the town of Lewis, according to Lewis County sheriff's deputies.
Deputies said Steven L. Nellenback, 42, Rhimiller Road, was driving east on Osceola Road when he failed to pull over when so directed. He soon lost control of his vehicle around a curve, causing the vehicle to go off the right side of the road and hit a tree.
Mr. Nellenback was taken by West Leyden ambulance to Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, for evaluation. He then allegedly refused to submit to a Breathalyzer test and was arraigned in Lewis Town Court and sent to Lewis County jail, Lowville, on $1,000 bail.
Mr. Nellenback additionally was charged with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer, failure to keep right, failure to comply and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.
His driver's license was suspended pending prosecution on a prior DWI arrest, deputies said.
State police and firefighters from West Leyden and Redfield assisted at the scene.
