Greig postpones its decision on a mining moratorium
THURSDAY, JULY 17, 2008

GREIG — A proposed six-month moratorium on storage facilities and extraction of natural resources, including water, was put on hold for another month.

Councilmen on Wednesday evening decided to adjourn the matter until their Aug. 20 meeting, primarily due to an absent board member, Town Supervisor Marilyn E. Patterson said.

"We want a full board when we vote," she said, noting board members were split on a similar proposal when it was introduced in March.

Wednesday's public hearing also will carry over to next month's meeting, Mrs. Patterson said. Most speakers were in favor of the proposal, although a few spoke against it, she said.

John T. and Lynn L. Smoke of Bangor, Pa., over the past several years have attempted to develop a bulk spring water operation on their Sweeney Road property, but many town residents have actively opposed the plan.
