Save energy; close schools in winter
THURSDAY, JULY 17, 2008

Now that gasoline, diesel, heating oil, natural gas and propane have become prohibitive in cost, wouldn't it be an idea for schools to close completely for the months of January and February? These are the coldest months of the year, and it makes no sense to operate the schools then.

Instead they could remain in session for July and August. Let's face it, the summers aren't that hot here so open windows and fans should be adequate. If in the rare event of a heat wave, the students could be given a "degree day" similar to a "snow day" in the winter.

The buses are powered by diesel, which is more expensive than gasoline. Also, the parents would not have to worry about icy roads or their children trapped in a blizzard.

Energy cost are ruining all school budgets, and something has to be done. Property taxes can't continue to cover these increases.

Perhaps teachers could be persuaded to assign less homework so the students would have a chance to enjoy longer evenings.
