LOWVILLE — Village trustees on Wednesday signed off on a family music and movie night to be held next month at Veterans Memorial Park.

Trustees voted 4-1 to endorse the event, proposed by the Lowville Business Association with assistance from the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce, and provide up to $100 toward it.

The event is to be held Aug. 6, with a rain date of Aug. 13. The village band, which plays at the park Wednesday evenings during the summer, would kick off the evening at its regular time of 7 p.m.

Plans include recognizing Millard Chamberlain, who has stepped down as the band's director after 32 years, formally introducing new director A.J. McCall and dedicating the new playground, LBA co-chairwoman Donna M. Smith told trustees.

Free ice cream and popcorn also are planned.

A classic family movie would then be shown on a projection screen, Mrs. Smith said, adding that more movie showings could be held in the future.

Trustee Dennis F. Bishop, who opposed the measure, expressed concern that such events could negatively impact the Town Hall Theater on Shady Avenue.

"I think your concept is great," Mr. Bishop said. "But I don't want to do one thing to hurt a local business."

He suggested that other types of activities be considered for such community nights.

Mrs. Smith said the movie showing at the theater would be announced at the event, "because we don't want to take business from them."

The movie shown at the park will be a classic one that goes along with the band's repertoire, which includes tunes from shows such as "Annie," "Oliver" and "Beauty and the Beast," she said.

The proposed evening would be a "completely different event" from attending the movie theater, Deputy Mayor Charles W. Truax said.

And Trustee Brian P. Western said he'd be comfortable with holding a single event this summer, at least.

"We'll try it one time," Mayor Mary E. Youngs said.
