POTSDAM — St. Lawrence Valley Trailblazers fullback Andy Deon was down on one knee, away from his teammates, staring out onto the Sandstoner Park field with three minutes left in the fourth quarter of Saturday night's game with Glove Cities.

He muttered to himself, "Come on guys."

St. Lawrence Valley was up by eight points, but Glove Cities was on the Trailblazers' 20-yard line. The Colonials scored two plays later on a 20-yard pass to Brian Baldwin from Nick Shepard.

Glove Cities tried to run it in for a two-point conversion and a tie. The St. Lawrence Valley defense made one final stop, though, securing a 22-20 Northeastern Football Alliance win — the Trailblazers' first victory in two years.

"That was scary," Deon said of the final three minutes. "We've been there before. We just sucked it up today, played the game and came out on top."

Deon led the Trailblazers on the ground with 50 rushing yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Ryan Mason took care of the rest, rushing for two touchdowns while passing 3-for-6 for 124 yards.

Mason was especially deadly on third downs. He converted five times in eight chances, twice leading to touchdowns.

"We told the guys that we needed to control the ball and convert in those situations," Trailblazers coach Mike Britton said. "Tonight they really stepped up when they needed to."

Glove Cities coach Matt Capano had a different take.

"There were some awful calls," he said of the officiating. "There's some real home cooking up here."

The most questionable officiating came in the second quarter and St. Lawrence Valley looking at fourth-and-20 just inside the 50-yard line.

Mason uncorked a long pass down the middle of the field, intended for Danny Staton Jr. It fell short, but a flag was thrown for pass interference against Braedon Fisher.

"That was another bad call," Capano said. "A lot of them went their way."

The Trailblazers turned the pass-interference penalty into six points and a 14-6 lead.

Glove Cities sacked Mason in the end zone to get a safety before the half ended and when into the break down 14-8.

After stopping the Colonials on their first drive of the second half, St. Lawrence Valley put together an 11-play, 77-yard drive for its final touchdown. It took nearly 10 minutes off the clock.

"Our goal is to control the clock as much as we can," Britton said. "We were able to do that tonight."

The Colonials answered right back before the end of the third quarter when Ryan Darling returned the kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. It moved to score to 22-14.

"We've been close in both our games this year," Shepard said. "We had a couple bad breaks and they played well."

St. Lawrence Valley moved to 1-1 on the season. Glove Cities, which lost to Utica 26-20 last week, dropped to 0-2. The Trailblazers travel to Utica next weekend.

"It feels good," Britton said. "It's nice to have at least a one-game win streak."

SYRACUSE 34, WATERTOWN 15

The Shock (1-1) raced out to a 20-0 halftime lead en route to a Northeastern Football Alliance victory over the Revolution in Syracuse.

T.J. Williams scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter for Watertown (1-1). He registered 15 carries for 79 yards, and Bryan Harris added 12 carries for 40 yards. Garry Pelletier went 8-for-24 passing for 111 yards for the Revolution.

OTTAWA 62, MASSENA 6

Only 20 players suited up for the Silver and Black's trip to face Empire Football League foe Ottawa. Several players planning to play in the game were turned away at the Canadian border.

The fatigue and lack of usable athletes were factors in the loss to the Deacon Demons.

It was the second straight week in which Massena gave up 62 points. The lone score for the Raiders came on a 62-yard passing play from Mark Wiltshire to Rob James. Wiltshire added 68 rushing yards on six attempts.

Massena dropped to 0-2, while Ottawa improved to 1-1.

QUEBEC 35, WATERTOWN 14

The Titans handed the Red and Black its second loss of the Empire Football League season in Quebec.

Quebec (2-0) defeated Ottawa in its season opener on July 12 by the same 35-14 score. No further details from Saturday's game were provided.
