LYONS FALLS — Lewis County sheriff's deputies said two Turin residents pulled a rare feat Tuesday: two accidents 15 minutes apart with the same truck, but with different drivers.
It all started about 6:45 p.m., deputies said, when Duane E. Coffey, 49, of 3943 West Road, tried backing up his pickup after noticing he missed his turn onto Rumble Road from Lyons Falls Road.
Deputies said Mr. Coffey ended up striking Brandi Greene's vehicle instead. Police said Ms. Greene, address unknown, told Mr. Coffey she was going to report the accident to law enforcement, which prompted him to switch seats with his passenger, Amanda S. Ackerman, 21, also of 3943 West Road, and leave.
Ms. Ackerman drove about one-quarter mile down Rumble Road, deputies said, before the pickup went into a ditch and flipped over about 7 p.m. Deputies said Mr. Coffey and Ms. Ackerman, who is Mr. Coffey's girlfriend's niece, fled the scene after the second accident.
Both turned themselves in Wednesday to the Lewis County Sheriff's Department after authorities tracked them down using information from witnesses, the abandoned vehicle and Mr. Coffey's wallet, which was left behind.
Mr. Coffey was charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a hypodermic needle, unsafe backing and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.
Ms. Ackerman was charged with speeding, failure to keep right and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.
Both are to answer charges in Lyonsdale Court.
