Looking for ways to punish Russia for its aggression in Georgia, a group of U.S. lawmakers would take the 2014 Olympics out of Russia.

The House Georgia Caucus intends to introduce a resolution supporting the proposal when Congress returns from recess later this month. The 2014 Winter Olympic Games are scheduled for Sochi on the Black Sea near the Georgia border.

A draft of the resolution says, "It is practically and financially untenable to hold the 2014 Winter Olympic Games less than 20 miles from a zone of conflict, particularly when the prospective host country has played a significant role in the escalation of that conflict."

Russia launched an attack against Georgia on the eve of this year's Beijing Olympics.

"Russia must realize that its actions in Georgia will not be ignored by the international community," Rep. Allyson Schwartz, D-Pa., caucus co-chair, said.

The International Olympic Committee is taking the same position it has followed in regard to critics who disapprove of the Olympic Games in China for political reasons. The games, IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies said, are "not a tool to be used by politicians." She called it premature to make judgments about something that is six years away.

The resolution may allow U.S. politicians to demonstrate their displeasure with Russia. But it will be little more than a symbolic response to a crisis that calls for more meaningful international action.
