CHAUMONT — The village wants to renovate its tennis courts, but the cost might delay the project indefinitely.
Village Trustee Mark J. Zegarelli said renovating the two courts, at Old Town Springs Road and Main Street, would cost the village about $45,000. The village owns and maintains the public tennis courts and the adjacent basketball court.
"I knew it was going to be expensive, but I did not think it would be that high," Mr. Zegarelli said at a village Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday.
He said the rising cost of asphalt is the main reason for the high estimate. Paving alone will cost around $26,000.
The village does not have any funds dedicated to the tennis court renovation, nor does it have grant money for it. However, the village board has no intention of giving up on the project.
"Maybe we can make it happen," Mr. Zegarelli said.
Trustee Valerie E. Rust said the board will seek financial help from the town of Lyme and youth organizations in the region and look for grants.
