CLAYTON — Mike Desforges, of Burlington, Ontario, reached the five-bass limit worth 17 pounds on Saturday and won the Stren Series Northern Division tournament with a combined weight of 77 pounds, 1 ounce.
The top finish counted as Desforges's first tour victory.
"This is the first time I've won a Stren Series event," Desforges said. "I really wanted to win pretty bad."
Desforges worked his way from seventh place after the first day of competition in order to take home $25,000 in tournament winnings.
Second place went to Joseph Sancho of New Windsor with 73-5, third was Derek Strub of Elora, Ontario (71-07), fourth was Chittenango's Matthew Martin (70-12), and Trevor Jancasz (70-02) of White Pigeon, Mich., rounded out the top five.
James Richardson Sr., a Harrison, Ontario, native, won in the co-angler division with a 19-bass weight of 62-11. Richardson took home $5,000 and a 198VX Ranger boat.
