CARTHAGE — A local couple plans to open a cafe that will put a new spin on baked goods.

Alison and Ralph Lentz will offer puff pastries filled with diced red pork and slices of sweet potato. The Planning Board on Monday night found no reason to deny the application.

"It wasn't a controversial one," said board Chairman Sean P. McHale.

Mr. McHale said the Lentz business probably will not be in direct competition with existing restaurants on State Street because the food is not what people are used to.

"They're just trying to find a cuisine that's different than the normal run, like a Chatterbox or Superior Restaurant," Mr. McHale said. "It'll be something that caters to a different taste."

Mr. McHale expects the cafe, at 327 State St., to serve light lunch dishes and baked goods, but the menu hasn't been finalized.

"We're still in the planning stages," Mr. Lentz said.

The cafe will have an open food preparation area so customers can watch as their food is cooked, according to Mr. McHale.

The couple said their sign will be modest and comply with current zoning laws.

"I figure if people want to come there, they will find out where it is," Mrs. Lentz said.
