WEST MONROE — The state Department of Health has found a mosquito pool that tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis near Toad Harbor Swamp here.

The type of mosquitos carrying the virus bite only birds and not humans or mammals, according to Dr. Dennis Norfleet, interim public health director for the Oswego County Health Department.

EEE can affect the central nervous system in humans. It also can cause fever, headache, fatigue, muscle pain and swelling of the brain. No vaccine exists for human exposure to EEE.

The mosquitos were collected Aug. 18 near the large swamp on the north shore of Oneida Lake. The sample was tested at the DOH's Wadsworth Center Laboratories, according to a Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning press release.

The mosquito population is expected to decline with the onset of colder weather. There are no plans for aerial spraying at this time, the release states.
