The Watertown City Council is expected to act on a resolution at its Tuesday meeting that will increase the annual base salary for a police captain to $80,000. That does not include income earned for overtime.
There is one member of the Police Department with that title: Gary R. Comins, a 22-year veteran.
The resolution is being considered, according to a City Hall memo, because a captain is second in command behind the police chief, but has a base pay of less than a lieutenant in the detective division, which is $79,554. There are four lieutenants listed on the current year's department roster. The captain position now makes a base pay of $79,421.
