PORT LEYDEN — Lyonsdale residents overwhelmingly supported a town proposal to eliminate one of its two justice positions.

In a special election Tuesday, residents voted 51-1 in favor of the proposition, Supervisor Roscoe K. "Rocky" Fawcett Jr. said. He has suggested that revenues from the judicial caseload hardly justify one judge, let alone two.

Keith F. Todd resigned from his justice spot last year to run on the Republican line for town supervisor after then-Supervisor David F. Rounds decided not to seek re-election. Mr. Fawcett, a Republican who ran on an independent line, narrowly defeated Mr. Todd.

The Town Council has not appointed anyone to fill the vacancy, leaving Grant I. Galarneau as the lone justice.
