POTSDAM — St. Lawrence University's men's soccer team struck for two goals in the first four minutes of the game and went on to record a 4-0 shutout of Johnson & Wales in the opening game of the Lotto Classic on Friday at Clarkson.
James Stewart scored the first goal for SLU in the second minute, and Paul LaMarca added a goal in the fourth. Emmanuel Mbong assisted on both scores. Ryan Moore and Marco Falcon-Viale added goals later in the first half for SLU.
Emilio Coletta made one save for the shutout.
FREDONIA 1, CLARKSON 0
Peter Dagel scored the only goal in the 103rd minute to lift Fredonia past Clarkson in the first round of the Lotto Classic in Potsdam.
Ryan O'Donnell and Brett Wysocki assisted on the goal. Tom Cavanaugh needed only four saves to earn the win for Fredonia (1-0).
Mike St. Croix stopped six shots for Clarkson (0-1).
WOMEN'S SOCCER
SUNY POTSDAM 2, SUNY CANTON 0
Lacey Malbeuf was involved in each of SUNY Potsdam's goals in a nonconference win in Canton.
Malbeuf assisted Jen Rutan on the first and converted on a pass from Desi Webster for the second score. Sarah Casey made two saves for the Bears (1-0).
Aubrey Parrish stopped 12 shots for SUNY Canton (0-1).
VOLLEYBALL
SAINTS WIN TWICE
The St. Lawrence University volleyball team earned straight-set victories against SUNY Oswego and SUNY Oneonta at the Red Dragon Invitational in Oneonta.
The Saints downed the Lakers 25-23, 25-19, 25-18. They turned around and defeated the host Red Dragons 25-17, 25-17, 25-19.
The tournament continues at 10 a.m. today.
GOLDEN KNIGHTS TAKE TWO
Clarkson University easily downed Hartwick and Utica during the first day of competition at the Red Dragon Invitational at SUNY Oneonta.
The Golden Knights didn't drop a set and beat Hartwick 25-12, 25-15, 26-24 in the opener. Clarkson then defeated Utica 25-17, 25-9 and 25-9. They'll play St. Lawrence University at 10 a.m. today.
POTSDAM DROPS A PAIR
The Bears struggled in the first day of the Red Dragon Invitational at SUNY Oneonta, dropping matches to Union and Scranton.
SUNY Potsdam lost in four sets to Union - 25-16, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21. Scranton then blew out the Bears with a straight-sets victory.
The Bears will play both St. Lawrence University and Clarkson today.
