Brian Magovney is perfectly clear when he talks about his intentions for his future in athletics.
"Baseball is my No. 1 sport," he said recently, "it's what I want to play in college."
But even though he's more comfortable in a batter's box than a penalty area, Magovney isn't naive enough to think the only game worth playing is baseball. Nor is he willing to deprive himself of other experiences as he pursues that dream.
Entering his fourth season as the starting goalkeeper for the Immaculate Heart Central boys soccer team, Magovney, a junior, has already proven he can produce as many highlights wearing keeper gloves, as he does with batting gloves.
Andy Short began working with Magovney as an eighth-grader, when Anthony Burgess was still head coach at IHC. Short, now is his third year as the man in charge, doesn't spend as much time with his goalie as before. He doesn't have to because Magovney already knows what to do on his own.
"We don't have to do new things," Short said. "He comes to me with ideas now. I have 27 kids on the roster, and three of them are goalies. He takes the younger guys and pushes them, and pushes himself. It allows me the luxury to focus with the rest of the team on other things."
Magovney made about 11.7 saves per game for the Cavaliers last season, when they finished a disappointing 5-10-2 overall, and 3-4-2 in the Frontier League. Magovney provided a solid wall of defense for a young team that struggled on the attacking end, as 2007 provided a stark contrast to Magovney's rookie season, when the Cavaliers went 13-3-3.
"There were games when he single-handedly gave us an opportunity to win," Short said. "Some we did, some we didn't. If we can score two (goals) a game, we think we have a chance to win every game with him in net."
Magovney said he played just over 80 summer baseball games. But he made sure to reserve one night a week, in between 4-5 doubleheaders per week, for soccer.
The schedule didn't leave much free time, but the three-time soccer all-star, who has held 21 opponents scoreless in his career, doesn't want to specialize exclusively in baseball just yet. He also starts on the Cavaliers' varsity basketball team.
"I just like all the sports too much to give one up yet. I always like to be doing something," he said. "I told myself, 'Monday nights (in the summer), I have to play soccer.'"
Magovney is already one of the most influential athletes to compete for IHC. He helped the Cavaliers win a state baseball title in 2006, and this fall he'll likely surpass Mike St. Croix's school record of 28 career shutouts.
Short pointed out that Magovney isn't much taller or stronger than he was as a rookie, adding that Magovney's understanding of the game has proven to be his best attribute.
"He's on the field as a coach. That's his mentality," Short said. "He works harder now than when he didn't know anything, and his most important developments have been mental."
Short's evaluation isn't surprising, and Magovney has clearly taken advantage of being the only player on the field who can see an entire match unfold in front of him.
"I know how to change my defense so they're in the right position, and can read better where a player might make a run," he said. "Those are the things that make it so you don't have to make a save every time."
"A" DIVISION
Outlook: Graduation depleted this division of its stars, but this season should be more exciting than last, when Watertown ran away with the title. The Cyclones have the largest holes to fill, having lost 11 members from their Section 3 Class AA semifinalist squad. Expect city rivals Watertown and Immaculate Heart to fight it out for the championship.

"B" Division
Outlook: If either General Brown or South Jefferson can find a way to solve Lowville's defense, there might be a chance to win the division. But it's unlikely, as Watertown was the only team last year to score more than once against Lowville until the sectional finals. The Red Raiders' strength, again, will lie in the defensive end. They return the league's best keeper, two-time All-North selection Zach Haenlin, as well as A.J. Capone. General Brown has four league all-stars back, and should continue to get better.

"D" Division
Outlook: Copenhagen reclaimed supremacy by winning the title last year, and returning to the Section 3 Class D title game for the second time in three seasons. Lyme and LaFargeville have grabbed the banner on occasion in recent years, but the Golden Knights continue to boast the most consistent program. This division returns plenty of scoring, however, from a year ago, including Cory Walker (Lyme), Gage LeClair (Sackets Harbor), Ben Freeman (Copenhagen), Pat Snyder (Copenhagen), and LaFargeville's Dan Mills and Taylor Parks.
