There are a couple new and exciting developments for area girls swimming this season.

First, a new squad has joined the other 11 teams in the Frontier League.

South Jefferson, coached by Tim Corbett and Erin Wiley, will compete in the "C" Division this year.

Another development, in Section 3, allows swimmers and divers to qualify for state competition during any meet of the season, instead of strictly at the sectional meet.

This will benefit standouts like Watertown's Aubrey Kettrick, who missed state qualification in the 100-yard freestyle by .07 seconds at the Section 3 meet last year. She had competed at states in that event the season before.

"Everybody in Section 3 is just thrilled about it," Watertown coach Lori Peters said. "The qualifying times are still tough, but its great for Section 3 swimming."

Indian River lost standout Ashley Forsyth, who moved from the area since last season. Forsyth broke several school, league and Section 3 records and competed in two events at the state meet last year. Her departure will deeply affect the Indian River team but has left an opportunity for other individuals.

"A" Division

Outlook: Watertown could again win the division if their young swimmers are able to develop quickly. The Cyclones hope to send senior Aubrey Kettrick to the state meet at the end of the season.
