Man pleads guilty to weapon possession

A Fort Drum man charged in March with shooting three bullets into an occupied Mill Street house pleaded guilty Friday in Jefferson County Court to a weapon possession charge.

Hubert Broadnax Jr.,22, pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Sentencing was set for Oct. 14.

He was accused of firing shots from a vehicle into a house at 862 Mill St. on Feb. 28 following a disagreement with residents there. According to court documents, Mr. Broadnax told police he had been at the house earlier and, shortly after leaving, discovered he was missing his identification.

During a subsequent phone conversation with residents there, he became angry after being told his identification was not there.

He borrowed an acquaintance's gun and had a second acquaintance drive him past the residence, at which time he told police he fired up to four shots at the house.

One shot hit a television and two lodged in walls, but no one was injured. There were five people inside the house at the time.

In other court activity Friday:

Mark D. Hartnett,an inmate at Gowanda Correctional Facility in Erie County, formerly of Truxton, Cortland County, was sentenced to one to three years in state prison for a July 7 guilty plea to felony driving while intoxicated. He also was fined $2,500 and had his driver's license revoked.

He was accused of DWI Sept. 14 on Route 3 in the town of Watertown. His sentence will be consecutive to a 11/3- to 4-year sentence imposed in Cortland County in October upon his third conviction for a DWI offense.

Jason P. Manko-Smith,26, of 368 Franklin St., Apt. 3, was sentenced to six years' probation and ordered to register with the state as a Level 1 sexual offender for July 11 guilty pleas to three counts of sexual misconduct. He was accused of having sexual contact with two underage females in the summer of 2007.

Misty L. Ostrom,24, of 1005 Bronson St., was sentenced to time served and five years' probation for a July 7 guilty plea to fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

She was accused of having 12 small bags containing cocaine in Watertown in mid-March.

Beth A. Smith,24, whose last known address is 206 Franklin St., Apt. 307, was sentenced to five years' probation and ordered to pay $2,350 in restitution for a July 11 guilty plea to fourth-degree grand larceny.

She was accused of writing $14,525 in checks drawn on the account of David B. Breeden Jr. without his permission. Mr. Breeden, her former roommate, was deployed to Iraq at the time the checks were written.

Raven C. Carreira,22, of 168 W. Remington St., Black River, was sentenced to three years' probation after pleading guilty July 9 to third-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

She was accused of writing two checks, one for $28.47 and a second for $28.84, to Bernardo's Pizzeria, 702 Coffeen St., in April using a closed account belonging to Rebecca J. Cole, Watertown. The victim had closed her checking account after her purse was stolen from a Watertown bar.

Maricela Ornelas,29, Syracuse, pleaded guilty to third-degree attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance. Sentencing was set for Oct. 31. She and her brother, Jose A. Ornelas, were accused of having more than 200 grams of cocaine in her vehicle during a Dec. 18 traffic stop on Route 37 in the town of Alexandria.

Mr. Ornelas, 23, also of Syracuse, pleaded guilty April 23 to third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and was sentenced June 30 to time served and five years' probation. His probation supervision was transferred to Onondaga County.
