POTSDAM — Senior Nick Howard accumulated 211 rushing yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns for Potsdam by halftime in a Northern Football Conference interdivision game with Saranac under the new lights at the new Sandstoner field on Friday night.
Howard played the first series of the third quarter for the Sandstoners, ran it two more times and added 18 more yards to his total. Potsdam went on to win 42-0.
"I worked out every week all summer," Howard said. "We came here, we did a little bit of practicing and it really helped us out. By preseason we already knew everything."
Howard started the scoring on Potsdam's very first drive with a 32-yard run with 5 minutes, 38 seconds remaining. It wouldn't be his longest touchdown run of the night.
In the second quarter, on the first play, Howard ran to the right side on a sweep, broke free of one would-be tackler and used his speed to take it 64 yards into the end zone.
"It was beautiful play," he said. "I broke loose, stepped over one guy and it was gone from there."
The Potsdam offensive line opened holes all night, allowing the Sandstoners to rush for 349 yards and six touchdowns. Quarterback Taylor Caswell needed to go to the air only twice.
Saranac Chiefs head coach Mark Burrell couldn't find an answer or the right defensive lineman to fill gaps and stop Howard.
"Their offensive line whooped us," he said. "I think my grandmother could run behind that offensive line. (Howard's) a great running back, but it's easy when you've got an offensive line like that."
Potsdam coach Jim Kirka said his linemen have notoriously been successful in opening holes for the running game.
"The strength of this team always has been and always will be the fact that we have strong, tough guys up front," he said. "These guys are hungry to keep blocking."
The defensive line was nearly as impressive. It allowed only 87 rushing yards by the Chiefs. Saranac was able to move the ball fairly well in the air, but not quite enough to get a score.
Saranac threatened in the first quarter when quarterback Jason Lavarnway marched the Chiefs into the red zone on their opening drive. Lavarnway then threw what looked to be a completed touchdown pass to Kyle Rascoe, but Potsdam's Ryan LaShomb knocked the ball loose before Rascoe could come down. It was the only time Saranac threatened to score.
"The young kids did a great job in the secondary," Kirka said. "They wanted to throw ball, we were in position, got a pass rush and we were in position. I'm very happy with what the did."
Lavarnway said the line started to break down early and he was hurried numerous times.
"We started off good. We were moving the ball down the field and then the left side of the line started slacking off," he said. "We tried the best we could. They're a Class A school and really big."
Lavarnway finished 8-for-17 and 100 passing yards for Saranac (0-1).
Joe Ditullio, Zac Linsky and LaShomb added touchdowns for Potsdam (1-0 overall).
INDIAN RIVER 37, BEEKMANTOWN 6
Andre Green carried six times for 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Warriors defeated the Eagles in a Northern Football Conference interdivision game at Philadelphia.
Justin Swinton scored twice and finished with 91 yards for Indian River (1-0). Curtis Dukes ran for 122 yards and a score on five carries.
MASSENA 36, PLATTSBURGH 20
The Red Raiders took advantage of numerous Plattsburgh penalties to capture an interdivision win in Massena.
Evan Raymo returned a kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown and added a 50-yard run for another score to lead the Red Raiders (1-0). Ian Dominique added two rushing touchdowns for Massena.
Jared Murphy threw one touchdown and totaled 142 passing yards for Plattsburgh (0-1).
TUPPER LAKE 30, AUSABLE VALLEY 7
The Lumberjacks easily downed AuSable Valley in an NFC Division III contest in Clintonville.
Ian Smetanick rushed for 82 yards on 16 carries for two touchdowns to lead Tupper Lake (1-0). Matt Dechene highlighted the game with a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown for the Lumberjacks.
Ben Prentiss scored a touchdown on a 73-yard run for AuSable Valley (0-1).
