Former Providence College head basketball coach Tim Welsh, a SUNY Potsdam graduate and former assistant coach, has a new gig.
Welsh, who was let go by Providence College after spending 10 years as head coach, has signed on as a college basketball analyst for both ESPN and Sportsnet New York. He'll be the color analyst on game broadcasts for ESPN and a studio host for SNY's Big East games.
"I'll look smart," Welsh told the Syracuse Post-Standard. "I won't lose any games."
Welsh said he looked into a few coaching opportunities during the offseason, but declined them.
"I had opportunities, but I just wasn't ready to jump back into it right away," he said. "The timing wasn't right. I want to take my time and find the right spot."
One of Welsh's first assignments for ESPN will be SU's season-opener on Nov. 16 at the Carrier Dome in the College Basketball Experience Classic.
Reports: UConn Freshman forward Miles expelled
STORRS, Conn. - Connecticut freshman basketball player Nate Miles told a newspaper Thursday night that he doesn't know if he will appeal being expelled from school after being arrested for violating a restraining order.
Miles made his comments by telephone to the Connecticut Post.
The Hartford Courant reported that Miles' guardian, Sean Patterson, said the 6-foot-7 forward was expelled following an administrative hearing Thursday.
"In my mind, he was railroaded today," said Patterson, a former youth coach who became Miles' legal guardian.
A university spokesman refused comment, citing student confidentiality rules.
According to court documents, the 20-year-old Miles was served with a restraining order on Sept. 22, after a woman claimed he had attempted to force her into having sex. He is accused of violating the order by placing a phone call to the woman less than 20 minutes after receiving it.
Duke, UCLA, Michigan and Southern Illiniois will serve as the regional hosts for the 2K Sports Classic benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer.
The winners of the four four-team tournaments advance to the semifinals and finals at New York's Madison Square Garden on Nov. 20-21.
