CANTON — A Norwood man who is accused of throwing three kittens against a wall, killing one, and beating a dog with deer antlers has been
indicted on animal-cruelty charges.
Jonathan E. Black, 25, of 497 Douglas Road, was indicted Monday by a St. Lawrence County grand jury on four counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and one count of third-degree criminal mischief, all felonies, and one count of misdemeanor child endangerment.
He is accused of throwing the kittens against a wall Aug. 9 in his town of Potsdam home, with two of them surviving.
"After catching the kittens, he threw them like a baseball would be thrown, thereby killing one of the kittens, such conduct, in its totality especially depraved or sadistic," the indictment reads.
Mr. Black also is accused of beating a dog with deer antlers and then repeatedly kicking it. He also allegedly damaged a refrigerator, walls, a ceiling, a satellite dish and table. He was also charged with pushing Tonya Gilbert while she was changing the diaper of a 3-month-old child.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 20 in St. Lawrence County Court.
The grand jury also returned indictments against the following:
Dean H. Washburn, 32, of 317 Kiah St., Ogdensburg, was charged with first-degree sexual abuse. He is accused of having sexual contact with a woman July 2, along with punching and dragging her.
Jeffrey R. Phillips, 25, of 533 County Route 4, Ogdensburg, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and misdemeanor driving while intoxicated. He is accused of driving a stolen 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix May 17 and crashing the car on County Route 15 in the town of Oswegatchie. His blood alcohol content was not available.
Howard E. Donnelly II, 25, of 106 Bishop Ave., Massena, was charged with second-degree burglary and petit larceny. He is accused of breaking into Tanya Green's apartment May 9 on Walnut Avenue in the village of Massena and stealing a digital camera, an MP4 player and makeup.
