CANTON — A Potsdam woman admitted Thursday in St. Lawrence County Court to intentionally starting a fire at her Route 11B home to collect insurance money.

Eleanor M. Cota, 42, of 681 Route 11B, pleaded guilty to attempted third-degree arson, a felony. The plea agreement calls for her to receive six months in the St. Lawrence County jail and five years' probation when she is sentenced Dec. 8. She also will have to pay restitution.

Her codefendant, Reginald E. Rattie, 34, of Route 11B, Potsdam, was sentenced in July to six months in county jail and five years' probation. He pleaded guilty in April to third-degree attempted arson. Ms. Cota had owned the home.

The blaze drew firefighters from Potsdam, West Stockholm, Parishville, Norwood and Hannawa Falls. A Potsdam firefighter was treated at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, for smoke inhalation and injuries from falling down stairs.

Ms. Cota had been indicted by a county grand jury in April on charges of third-degree arson and second-degree insurance fraud.
