GOUVERNEUR — A longtime recreational products dealer is closing today because of lackluster sales and the downturn in the economy.
New England Sports Co., a more than 50-year-old dealership better known as Nesco — Fun for Sale, sold snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles and boats from various vendors at its Route 11 store. The company employed from 16 to 20 workers.
"It is just with the high price of gas, it's harder to sell stuff," Nesco owner Mark R. Miller said Friday. "Boat and snowmobile sales have dropped so much in the last four or five years. The all-terrain vehicle sales were also very flat."
The business sold Arctic Cat snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles, Yamaha snowmobiles, Princecraft boats and OMC and Mercury outboard motors.
"It was a tough call. We had trouble refinancing," Mr. Miller said of the decision to close.
Nesco encountered some financial troubles earlier this year when it fell behind on required payments to Georgia-based Textron, which provides so-called floor plan financing for Arctic Cat dealers.
Under the arrangement, a dealer is charged interest on the value of a snowmobile, all-terrain vehicle or similar product until it is sold. Textron filed a lawsuit in state Supreme Court against Nesco for payment.
Mr. Miller said that problem was resolved, but poor sales from lack of snow over the past several years hurt the business. He has owned the business since 1996.
"I appreciate everyone's patronage over the years," Mr. Miller said. "It has been a fun business. But due to tough economic times, we had to close it."
The store is offering 50 percent off all remaining parts and accessories in stock.
Mr. Miller said he has a prospective buyer for the 92-acre property.
