Jefferson Community College's men's lacrosse alumni weekend will take on a new feel this year. And a new name.

The first Pete Gaskin Alumni Game will be played at noon Sunday at JCC. But the event isn't new. It was first organized six years ago by current coach Mark Streiff and has become an annual happening.

"When he told me in the spring he asked me, 'Can I use your name?' And I said, 'What for?'" Gaskin said about the conversation he had with Streiff. "When he told me I almost broke out in tears."

The game will be renamed for Gaskin, a retired biology professor who is considered by many to be the father of JCC lacrosse. The Adams center resident was one of the sport's local pioneers, introducing it to the school during the 1970s.

"That was kind of a special time," Gaskin said. "It was kind of a wild thing, we have a lot of stories. ...We were looked at as a bunch renegades."

Gaskin founded the team, operated, and coached it on a club basis for several years before it became a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association in 1993. He often paid out of his own pocket for equipment, uniforms and other operational expenses all while leading efforts to establish varsity status for the squad.

Fifteen years have passed since the Cannoneers played their first "real," intercollegiate game.

"We just kind of wanted to recognize him for what he did," Streiff said. "He's such a nice guy. You have to honor someone like that."

The reunion has grown into a weekend-long event in recent years. Streiff said 25-30 former players usually take part, and that he expects a similar turnout this year.

Festivities begin at 9 a.m. today with a golf tournament at Highland Meadows. A short ceremony for Gaskin Sunday will be held before former and current players hit the field.
