BEAVER FALLS — Matt Cheney and Carlos Ruis II each placed in the top 10 to propel Beaver River to a second-place finish at the Beaver River Invitational on Saturday.

The Thousand Islands Secondary School in Brockville took first place as four runners finished in the top 10. The Pirates totaled 38 points, and Joey McFall came in second place to lead the way.

Cheney and Ruis placed fourth and ninth, respectively, as Beaver River recorded 66 points. Nick Lynch's fifth-place finish catapulted Watertown into third place with 79 points. Norwood-Norfolk's Jon Eng ended the race in third as the Flyers finished fifth overall with 116 points.

Canton's Matt Pierce finished 10 seconds ahead of McFall to claim first place in the competition.

TRAYNOR POWERS SOUTH JEFFERSON

Nate Traynor crossed the finish line in eighth place to help guide South Jefferson to sixth place with 132 points in the large schools division at the East Syracuse-Minoa Invitational.

Nick Sadlocha of ESM won the race, while Windsor scored 33 points for the team title.

Sean Hanson and Steve Fritton claimed 19th and 22nd places, respectively, for South Jefferson.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

BEAVERS TAKE SECOND

Karlee Duffer raced into fourth place and helped Beaver River collect 79 points for a second-place finish overall at the Beavers' invitational in Beaver Falls.

Katie Weisenberger captured first place, and Pulaski cruised to victory with 49 points. Aimee Beaudette finished third, and Maggie Lapinski claimed fifth as Canton grabbed third place with 82 points. Malone came in fifth overall with 142 points.

Watertown's Jillian Busby added a second-place finish.

WILLIAMS FUELS SPARTANS

Leah Williams captured fifth place as South Jefferson scored 165 points for ninth place in the large schools division at the East Syracuse-Minoa Invitational.

Lauren MacDonald of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill claimed the individual title, and Jamesville-DeWitt tallied 86 points for the team victory.

Carly VanTassel earned seventh place for South Jefferson.

SACKETS HARBOR 0

Lane Broadhurst collected six saves to help the Panthers secure the fourth seed in the Frontier League "D" Division playoffs with a play-in victory over the Patriots in Belleville.

Chris Leen contributed a goal and an assist for Belleville Henderson (7-8-2), which will travel to top-seeded Copenhagen for the division semifinals at a time and date to be determined. Tim Zeller and Robert Woytowicz also scored for the Panthers.

Sackets Harbor fell to 7-10.

NOTTINGHAM 3, CARTHAGE 1

Abdi Hirabi and Irahim Muia provided first-half goals to help send the Bulldogs to a nonleague victory at Carthage.

Edem Wemene scored on a penalty kick in the second half, and goalie Jon Reid turned away 10 shots for Nottingham (4-10-1).

Tyler Abbass sank a goal to tie the score, 1-1, in the first half, and Matt Hayden finished with 12 saves for the Comets (9-6-1).

GIRLS SOCCER

THOUSAND ISLANDS 6, SANDY CREEK 1

Sam Dano, Emily Kellogg and Courtney Henry each had a goal and an assist as the Vikings (14-2) defeated the Comets to capture the "C" Division championship in Frontier League.

"It's been a long time coming," Thousand Islands coach Tim Filiatrault said. "It's a great feeling."

Chelsea Claflin scored for Sandy Creek (2-8-4).

ALEXANDRIA 2, MORRISTOWN 1

Sabrina Sochia scored a pair of goals in just over four minutes of the second half to catapult the Purple Ghosts to their first win of the season in the River Rival Tournament in Alexandria Bay.

Chloe Whalen gave the Green Rockets (1-10-2) the early lead with a first-half goal. Jordan Bush stopped 11 shots for Alexandria (1-14).

LAFARGEVILLE 1,

HERMON-DEKALB 0 (OT)

Sam Hunter netted the game-winning goal in the second overtime as the Red Knights edged the Demons in the River Rival Tournament in Alexandria Bay.

Tamara Ives preserved the shutout with eight saves for LaFargeville (5-8-1). Beth Zeller finished with 15 saves for Hermon-DeKalb (6-9-1).
