OGDENSBURG — The Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad slowly is outgrowing its facilities on State Street and might move.

The squad Thursday purchased almost 25 acres of land between Routes 812 and 37 that could house a new station.

"We're hoping down the road to put some plans together and possibly build a new building," said Kenneth J. Gardner, director of operations. "The fleet may increase and we're gonna need more space."

Mr. Gardner said some ideas are being discussed, but everything is in its infancy and he could not say when formal plans will be complete.

The current facilities do not have locker rooms or places to meet or train. All training must be done outside the building, Mr. Gardner said.

The squad has about 55 members, and the equipment list is always growing. Mr. Gardner said the squad is one of few organizations where membership is either steady or increasing.

Mr. Gardner said expanding the current facilities was not possible, so the only solution was to purchase the property.

The land was bought for $250,000 with interest from endowment funds donated to the squad over the years.

With a larger facility, Mr. Gardner said, he hopes to bring more capabilities to the squad, such as CPR classes for the public and blood pressure checks at the station.

"A larger building would enhance our ability to do more both in-house and outside of the station," said Mr. Gardner.
