CANTON — There was no playing it cool after the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team picked up a 3-1 win over fourth-ranked Harvard University in an ECAC Hockey game at Appleton Arena Saturday.
For the eighth-ranked Saints, the win completed a weekend sweep of NCAA tournament teams from last year. SLU beat No. 3 Dartmouth 3-0 on Friday.
"Two points it two points, but these two points are special," said SLU captain Marianna Locke, a Brasher Falls native.
What made the win special for the Saints (7-1-2 overall, 4-0 ECAC Hockey) was losing three straight games to the Crimson last year, including a 3-2 loss in the conference tournament championship game.
"You have to get up against Harvard, they are a great transition team," said SLU's Carson Duggan. "This was an unbelievable weekend."
About the only thing that went wrong for the Saints on Saturday was the Appleton Arena Zamboni, which was out of order.
The teams had a shortened pregame warm-up and then only a five-minute break after the first period. A 10-minute start to the second period was played, and then the ice was resurfaced by the Zamboni from the Canton Pavilion. The rest of the second period was played, and there was no resurfacing prior to the start of the third period.
The Saints appeared to benefit most from the fresh ice as Duggan scored her 87th career goal just 1:37 into the second half of the second period, which was officially 11:37 on the score sheet. Linemate Jordan Pyers fought for the puck along the boards with a Harvard player and got it free to Duggan, who skated in from behind the net and put a shot between the legs of Harvard goalie Christina Kessler.
"That was a good goal to get," Duggan said. "It was a weird game with the whole Zamboni situation."
Harvard (3-2-1), which was shutout 2-0 by Clarkson on Friday, had a chance to tie the game at 16:29 of the second period on a two-on-one breakaway that featured last year's Patty Kazmaier winner, Sarah Vaillancourt. Vaillancourt sent a quick pass to Liza Ryabikina, who was just outside the crease, but SLU goalie Brittony Chartier slid over quickly and stuffed the attempt with her leg pad.
"I thought Harvard played a great game," Chartier said. "We knew they are very skilled. There's very little margin for error."
Karell Emard set up SLU's second goal with a pass from behind the net to Tara Akstull, who put a wrist shot over Kessler's blocker at 7:11 of the third period.
SLU's third goal was set up after Locke stole the puck from a Harvard player and sent teammates Vanessa Emond and Emma Clark off on a breakaway. Emond sent a pass to Clark, who one-timed it into the net at 10:18. It was Locke's 99th career point.
"Coach (Chris Wells) always talks about working hard from goal line to the other goal line," Locke said.
Wells was happy with the way his team played against two of the top teams not only in ECAC Hockey, but in the nation.
"We played solid against two very good hockey teams that have a lot of speed," Wells said. "We haven't played two teams that can skate like that, yet. Chartier made some good saves and she eliminated any rebound chances. I thought we had great composure with the puck and really battled hard. You could feel it was like a playoff atmosphere."
Harvard, which went 22-0 in conference play last year, snapped a scoreless streak of 115:29 on the weekend by scoring a five-on-three goal at 15:29 of the third period off a slap shot from defenseman Cori Bassett.
