AMHERST, Mass. — St. Lawrence University scored three unanswered goals to come from behind and defeat MIT, 3-2, in the first round of the NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament on Saturday.
Brendan Gorman scored back-to-back goals in the 61st and 74th minute to tie the game at 2-2. Paul LaMarca netted the game-winner in the 79th for the Saints (13-6-1).
"Since the beginning of the year, I told this team that they'll never be champions if they can't come from behind and win," said SLU coach Bob Durocher. "They stayed composed despite being down two goals and were able to regain momentum after putting away our first goal."
St. Lawrence will play Amherst in the second round today.
Christian Therkeisen and Andrew Bishara scored for MIT (16-4-2).

The Golden Eagles scored three goals in the final 15 minutes of the first half to take a commanding lead over the Bears in the semifinals of the ECAC championships in Rochester.
Jessica VanAllen scored twice, while Taylor Lanio netted one goal and assisted on another for SUNY Brockport (11-5-3). Nicole Gibaud also scored for the Golden Eagles.
Sarah Casey played all but four minutes in net and had six saves for SUNY Potsdam (10-9-2).
MEN'S BASKETBALL
SUNY POTSDAM 68, HOBART 66
Hobart blew two late opportunities to tie the Bears, and SUNY Potsdam hung on to win a nonconference game in Geneva.
Brendan Graney came off the bench to lead Potsdam with 20 points and six rebounds. Damon Brown added 16 points for the Bears (1-0).
Rob Estep scored 20 points, while Michael Barlow supplied 10 points off the bench for Hobart (0-1).
CLARKSON 54, SUNY MORRISVILLE 52
The Golden Knights nearly blew a 15-point, second-half lead to the Mustangs, but hung on to win a nonconference game in the season-opener at Morrisville.
James Evans scored 10 points and was the only player in double digits for Clarkson (1-0). Brandon Linton and Keith Murray each added eight points.
Stephen Grant had 16 points to lead all scorers, while Elonzo Wilson supplied 10 points for SUNY Morrisville (0-1).
SUNY OSWEGO 116, SUNY CANTON 68
Chad Burridge scored 24 points to lead the Lakers past the Kangaroos in a nonconference win in Oswego.
Stanley Francois added 19 points for SUNY Oswego (1-0).
Silvon John scored 17 points, and Antonia Valentin netted 14 points for SUNY Canton (0-2).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
WENTWORTH 72, CLARKSON 66
Kirsten Vallone paced the Leopards with 17 points to help defeat the Golden Knights in the first round of the Wheaton Tip-Off Tournament in Wheaton, MA.
Wentworth advanced to the championship round, while Clarkson (0-1) will face Lasell in the consolation game at 3 p.m. today. Jessie Coffey added 15 points for the Leopards.
Michelle Reddinger had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Golden Knights (0-1). Carey Turner supplied 15 points and Sierra Noles had 14 points for Clarkson.
SUNY DELHI 65, JEFFERSON CC 53
Shataya McComb scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Broncos to a Region 3 victory at Delhi.
Meghan Fowler and Lani Smith added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for Delhi (3-3), which was tied with Jefferson Community College at halftime.
Dana Stenhouse accounted for 14 points, and she and Tara Gervera each grabbed 12 rebounds for the Cannoneers (1-2).
HOUGHTON 69, SUNY CANTON 46
The Kangaroos dropped their third straight with a nonconference loss to Houghton at Clarkson in Potsdam.
Leah French scored 15 points to lead all scorers for Houghton (1-0). Ashley Dupler added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Teresa Morley led SUNY Canton (0-3) with 11 points. Brittany Kenyon added 10 points and five rebounds for the Kangaroos. The five SUNY Canton starters combined for 22 points.
FOOTBALL
WPI 21, ST. LAWRENCE 20
The Saints missed a PAT in the fourth quarter that would have tied it, and the Engineers hung on to win the final Liberty League game of the season for both teams in Canton.
WPI quarterback Justin Wells threw for one touchdown and rushed for another. He eclipsed 2,000 yards passing with 229 yards against the Saints. Cody McGregor and Aaron Champagne also scored for the Engineers (7-3, 4-3 Liberty League).
Eric Jones, Rick Stepien and Ramon Mignott each scored for St. Lawrence (1-9, 1-6). The Saints scored all 20 of their points in the second half.

The Bears defeated the Golden Eagles with help from Nathan Larowe who won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events in Brockport.
Ryan Wentz added a win in the 200 butterfly for SUNY Potsdam (3-1).
Rob Cornish led SUNY Brockport (2-1) with wins in the 1,000 and 500 freestyles.

The Golden Eagles nipped the Bears thanks to a pair of wins from Janey Barrett and Jen Conklin in a meet in Brockport.
Barrett won the 500 and 1,000 freestyles, while Conklin paced the field in the 200 individual medley and 200 breaststroke. Maria Quagliana added victories in both diving events for SUNY Brockport (2-1).
Kate Matthews won the 50 and 100 freestyles for SUNY Potsdam (1-3).
VOLLEYBALL
SUNY POTSDAM SECOND IN ECAC
The Bears defeated St. John Fisher 25-16, 18-25, 25-19, 25-19 to advance to the ECAC championship match against host NYU in New York. The Violets won the championship, beating SUNY Potsdam 25-18, 25-18, 25-13.
Sammie Pickering had 36 kills for the tournament, leading the Bears, who made their first trip to the ECAC championship match in program history.
