One of the most dominant athletes in the Frontier League plays on the hardwood in front of raucous crowds at Watertown High School.
But she doesn't dribble, and her goal is to get the ball over the net, not through it.
Gisela Ocasio plays the often-overlooked sport of volleyball for the Cyclones. And this senior is doing her part to make sure that her sport of choice continues to matter to her school. The team has produced three sectional titles in the past four years and is arguably the most successful athletic program at the school.
Ocasio, who moved from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Watertown with her mother in August 2006 has tried to make the stands shake whenever the Cyclones take to the court. The scene at most home games resembles a party mixed with a percussion section as chants, clanging cowbells and pounding drums produce a deafening atmosphere.
"It's a Puerto Rican tradition to be really loud and use a lot of noisemakers and stuff like that," Ocasio said. "I tell them, 'These are my important games. You guys have to be here.' It's really nice because when you have support out there it helps you. When you have someone out there that's expecting you to win it really helps."
The only sound that comes close to matching the din of the Cyclones' fans is the sound created when Ocasio is set by a teammate and crushes the ball downward into the opponent's side. Defenders are left almost helpless, either not having enough time to react, or enough strength to reverse the direction of the ball.
"She always wants to put the ball away," Watertown coach Robin Boomhower said. "And I love that about her."
Watertown, which lost six players to graduation last season, still has the same goal as always: to continue the standard of excellence that it has achieved over the past decade. The Cyclones won't let themselves settle for anything less than perfection.
"The student body knows Watertown volleyball because it's probably the one sport that always wins," Boomhower said. "Everybody wants to see a winner."
Ocasio's presence, and that of her church group that packs the stands, should go a long way in aiding the Cyclones in winning their third-consecutive Section 3 title. And with many younger teammates, including a trio of talented sophomores, looking to Ocasio for leadership and support, the co-captain is saying all the right things.
"We have to set higher standards for ourselves so we can reach them," Ocasio said. "If we just go for Frontier League champs, then that's all we're going to get."
