ALEXANDRIA BAY — More than 100 years after construction of historic Boldt Castle on Heart Island came to an abrupt stop, visitors will have access to the renovated George Boldt bedroom suite next summer.

"The improvements to Boldt Castle are fantastic. They certainly drive visitation to the castle. A lot of people come back to see the improvements every year," said Shane K. Sanford, operations manager of Boldt Castle.

This summer, the castle opened the 1,040-square-foot dining room, featuring hardwood flooring, red mahogany wainscoting with fabric inlays, ornate red mahogany ceiling beams, two brass chandeliers and Boldt family furnishings.

Next year, the castle will reveal its newest attraction: the Boldt bedroom suite, which has been renovated with hardwood flooring, a fireplace mantel, ornate period lighting, antique plasterwork, oak seats along the windows of the circular room and other improvements.

The nine-month, $80,000 bedroom suite renovation project was competed by castle staff last month, and the staff plans to add furniture to the room, including a writing desk, a bed, a stuffed chair, window draperies and more, before the castle reopens for the season next year.

Mr. Sanford said one of the more notable features of the bedroom is the beautifully crafted plasterwork. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority, which owns and operates the castle, hired Hayles & Howe, Baltimore, to restore the plasterwork on the bedroom ceiling. The ornamental plasterwork and scagliola company has worked on several historical structures, including Buckingham Palace in London.

Mr. Sanford said that by 2010, the castle will open the Boldt wife and daughter suites to the public. Renovation work for the Louise and Clover Boldt suites, which are next to the George Boldt suite on the second floor of the west side of the castle, will begin next spring and will cost about $170,000.

There are 120 rooms in the castle, but Mr. Sanford said, "It's not our goal to complete every single one of them."

Over the past 31 years, the authority staff has been reconstructing the castle of George Charles Boldt, who halted construction on it after his wife, Louise, died in 1904.

Once the Louise and Clover Boldt suites are complete, the castle's staff will begin to make improvements to Alster Tower and then redo the kitchen.

The castle held a record-breaking 95 weddings this past season and Mr. Sanford said he anticipates a better season next year. The castle has 42 weddings booked for next summer so far.

"Things are looking good in regard to booking and improvements and we are looking forward to 2009 very optimistically," Mr. Sanford said.

The castle will reopen May 9 and close for the season Oct. 18.
