OGDENSBURG — It has been more than a year since the city's bronze soldier statue was last vandalized.
Very few people have seen that for themselves, however, as public viewing of the statue has dropped to nearly nothing since it was moved to the basement of the Frederic Remington Art Museum. The museum's basement is secure, with access limited to employees.
The 6-foot statue was removed in September 2007 from the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Library Park to protect it from further vandalism. No decision has been made on the safest spot for it.
The restoration committee has discussed several options, including installing video surveillance cameras, erecting a fence or keeping the statue inside Ogdensburg Public Library or the Frederic Remington Art Museum. Consideration also was given to locating the soldier in the Dobisky Visitors Center. The statue was created by Ogdensburg native Sally J. Farnham in 1904.
"We like to have it here. We have a lot of Sally Farnham stuff," said Edward A. LaVarnway, the museum's executive director.
The bronze soldier was repaired in late May, for the third time in three years, after vandals partially cracked the gun barrel and scabbard in summer 2007. The latest vandalism occurred in August 2007, about a week after the monument was rededicated in Library Park.
"We need to find a safe place for it," Mr. LaVarnway said.
