With his future already set, Ogdensburg Free Academy senior Jake Fredericks can relax and just focus on ending his high school track and field career in grand style.
Fredericks won three individual events — the 110- and 400-meter hurdles, and the 400 — at the Section 10 championship meet last spring and was one of the area's most dominant athletes.
He has already been accepted to St. Lawrence University so he will run this spring without having to worry about where he will spend the next four years competing.
"(SLU coach Mike Howard) is very excited to have me on the team," Fredericks said. "I visited the school so many times. We run all our indoor meets there. I love the campus, the food is great. Coach (Howard) talked to me quite a few times. He took an interest in me, as opposed to some of the other schools. I definitely look to be the best I can be and hopefully I'll take my status as a high school athlete and bring it up right to the next level."
OFA's coach, John Tebo, figures that Fredericks's selection of SLU will only help him enjoy a successful senior season for the Blue Devils.
"He's focused and he's hoping that St. Lawrence will want him to maintain what he's doing," Tebo said. "Coach Howard likes what we are doing with him. I think he's stronger, he's faster and he's more mature (than last year). His workout ethic is amazing. He wants to do well and he wants to break records."
Fredericks already holds several school records at OFA. He has the indoor school marks for the 300 and 600 as well as points earned in a season. He holds outdoor marks for the 400 and for most points earned in a season.
What may have been his biggest personal highlight was not a record, but winning the 110 hurdles and 400, and being named Most Outstanding Sprinter at OFA's Van Dusen Invitational last spring.
"That's huge," Fredericks said. "That was very exciting, especially since it's in Ogdensburg. I went to it once or twice (before high school). You hear about it in the paper and how big it is."
Last year was also the first year Fredericks emerged as one of Section 10's top individual athletes. He spent his first year on the varsity competing with former Norwood-Norfolk standout Gino Bisceglia.
"I always looked up to him," Fredericks said. "I wanted to be like him someday. Hopefully I can set an example for kids younger than me. There were a few close races. I remember at (the 2007 Section 10 meet) I was leading him in the first lap and in the second lap he just took off and it was insane. Hopefully other people can learn from my experience and be better than me someday."
Tebo also acknowledges the affect Bisceglia had, not just on his own athlete, but other runners.
"He talked to everybody," Tebo said. "He wasn't the typical elite kid who wouldn't talk to other kids. Jake saw he had to work as hard as he did. It gave him an idea what he needed to do."
Here's a closer look at the boys and girls teams in the Northern Athletic Conference at Frontier League:
NORTHERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
Outlook:For the first time Section 10 will follow the lead of other sections around the state and hold a state qualifier meet one week after the Section 10 championship meet. Both events are scheduled to take place at Potsdam High School. The change will allow coaches to pick events for the Section 10 championship meet with only the team title in mind and then let athletes focus on events they wish to pursue at the state level a week later. Malone swept both titles last year and never lost a dual meet, with the boys going 8-0 and the girls finishing 10-0. Top individuals returning among the boys are OFA's Jake Fredericks, Canton's Matt Pierce and Norwood-Norfolk's Jon Eng. Some of the top girls returning include Malone's Jessica Farmer, Tupper Lake's Kyla Kenyon and Gouverneur's Michelle Smith.
