Green scored goals wherever he was

Simply put, Mark Green could score.

Born in Massena, but raised in Watertown, Green piled up goals at every stop, establishing hockey scoring records in high school, prep school, college and as a professional. During the 1994-95 season while playing professionally for Utica, Green scored a staggering 71 goals in 71 games. He also added 56 assists.

That accomplishment broke the Colonial Hockey League record for goals in a season. Green was a regular 50-goal scorer in the minor leagues, playing for several teams. He was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in 1986 and also played in the Tampa Bay Lightning organization.

Green began his career in Watertown minor hockey and by his sophomore year in high school was a top scorer for the Watertown Cyclones. As a sophomore, he led Section 3 in scoring with 86 points. The following year, he led Section 3 with 40 goals and 68 points. He was named to the Empire State Games roster three straight years, and left Watertown High School after three years to attend New Hampton prep school, finishing with 110 career goals and 71 assists for the Cyclones.

At New Hampton, he led the team in scoring, but also starred at quarterback, running for 23 touchdowns, and set school lacrosse records. Green, a 6-foot-4 forward, was recruited by Providence, New Hampshire and Vermont among others before settling on Clarkson University.

Green played four seasons for Clarkson, supplying 58 goals and 58 assists in 118 games. During his senior season, he finished with 21 goals and 24 assists and helped the Golden Knights reach the Frozen Four in 1991.

Green played a key role in the game that clinched the Frozen Four berth, scoring on a power-play late for Clarkson's 4-3 victory over Lake Superior State. Green later scored the final goal in Walker Arena history in a game against Wisconsin.

Green went on to play for minor hockey teams in Johnstown, Atlanta, Louisville, Charleston, S.C., Saginaw, Mich., and Fayetteville, N.C.

Green played 10 years of professional hockey, finishing with 490 goals and 429 assists for his career. His final season was 2000-01 for Macon, Ga. He also worked as a player-coach in Saginaw.

Green died at age 36 at his home in October 2004. His death was ruled a suicide. He had two daughters and a son.
