CANTON — A veteran member of the village Board of Trustees announced Monday that he is running for the St. Lawrence County Legislature's District 9 seat.

Stephen M. Putman, a Democrat, says he's qualified to succeed longtime Democratic Legislator Peter W. FitzRandolph. Mr. Putman has served as village trustee since December 2002.

"I think the county is a large business and employer that has a big impact on people's lives," he said.

Mr. FitzRandolph announced last week that he will not seek re-election this November.

The District 9 seat represents the villages of Canton and Rensselaer Falls and a portion of the town of Canton.

Mr. Putman is superintendent of the St. Lawrence Central School District, Brasher Falls. He said he will bring a diverse résumé to the county legislative table, with expertise in budget analysis and development.

Mr. Putman lives in Canton with his wife, Marcia.
