Carl W. Paro, 84, of West Main Street died Monday March 8, 2010 at Mercy of Northern New York where he was a resident.
Born November 11, 1925 in Hermon, NY, he was the son of the late Ezeb and Lizzie Fort Paro, attended grade school at the Scotch Bridge one room schoolhouse and later Herman High School.
Mr. Paro entered the U.S. Army on January 27, 1944 and served in Luzon, New Guinea and South Philippines during World War II. He was honorably discharged on January 12, 1946.
He married Gladys M. Backus on May 8, 1944 in Jamestown, PA. Following his honorable discharge from the United States Army the couple moved to the area, including Carthage, Theresa, Pillar Point and Watertown.
Mr. Paro drove truck for E.L. Simmons, Watertown, was a supervisor at the Jefferson Rehabilitation Center on West Main Street and Vanduzee Street, both in Watertown for many years, built houses for John Reff, Watertown, did plumbing, heating and electrical work for Ed Bushall, was a truck driver for Neal Tooley, Dexter, Northern Haulers, Watertown and Ken Simpson, town of Pamelia. Following retirement he was a volunteer driver for the Jefferson County Department of Social Services for twenty years, until he was 78.
He was a member of the Truck Drivers Union, Watertown and the Dexter Grange.
Mr. Paro enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and water sports.
Surviving besides his wife, Gladys are two daughters and a son-in-law, Tracey David and her companion, Larry Brown, Watertown and Marie and Edwin Sykes, Dexter; a son, Bruce Paro, Watertown, five brothers, Franklin and Keith, both of Cortland, Harley, Adams, Darwin and Perry, both of Chaumont; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren. Two sons, Carl W., Jr. and John H., II, two brothers, Harold and Alan, a sister, Betty Satchwell and two grandsons, John Henry III and Martin died before him.
A graveside service at North Watertown Cemetery will be in the spring. Arrangements are with Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Inc., 38422 NYS Route 37, Theresa, NY.
