Three major earthquakes have erupted in recent months — in Haiti, Chile and Turkey — but seismologists say, in general, not to worry, the Associated Press reports.
Although it is possible that a powerful quake can increase the chances of others occurring elsewhere, the likelihood is small. Experts say the series of recent tremors probably are coincidental.
Earlier this week, tectonics scholar Bob Holdsworth of Durham University in Britain spoke reassuring words: "I can definitely tell you that the world is not coming to an end."
Scientists are observing, however, that increased building on the world's fault lines can lead to more injuries and deaths. Where to build and how to build it are questions generating discussion.
